Catherine Ellis was the fourth child of Susannah Thorpe & Humphrey Ellis born October 30th, 1837 & christened May 17th, 1841 at St Mary Magdalene, Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire. She was the twin sister of Sarah Ellis.

In 1841 Catherine was at home with her parents & brother John & sister Elizabeth at Hucknall Torkard, Notts.

By 1847 the family had moved to Tibshelf, Notts. At the time of the 1851 census Catherine, just 13, was a cotton framework knitter like her father. She had 3 sisters & 2 brothers at home. In 1857 Catherine gave birth to a son, Samuel.

The child of Catherine Ellis was:

el.6.4.4.1 Samuel Ellis born July-September 1857 at Hucknall Huthwaite, Notts; died Jan-March 1931 at Mansfield, Notts

Catherine married James Ashmore on February 21st, 1859, at St Bartholomew’s,  Clay Cross, Chesterfield.  Witnesses at the wedding were Joseph Ashmore & Charlotte Sadler.  James’ brother George Ashmore married on the same day.  James was born at Pilsley, Derbyshire & christened December 28th, 1828 at North Wingfield, Derbyshire, the son of Frances Cutts & Samuel Ashmore, a framework knitter.

In 1861 Catherine was visiting her parents & brothers & sisters at Tibshelf at the time of the census with her children Samuel Ellis (3), Joseph Ashmore (1) & Sarah A Ashmore (2 months). James at this time was lodging at Attercliffe & Darnall, Sheffield, Yorkshire with the Gaskill family.  With him was his younger brother Samuel & they were both coal miners.

The family lived for a brief time in Rotherham, Yorkshire where son James was christened, but sadly he died in infancy.

Catherine & James were living at Marlow’s Yard, Mansfield Woodhouse, Notts at the time of the 1871 census. James was a framework knitter & Catherine was a cotton winder. They had 4 children at home – Samuel (13) & Joseph (11) both factory hands, Sarah Ann (10) & Mary Elizabeth (2 months).

The family were still at Marlow’s Yard in 1881 & James continued to be a framework knitter. At home were Joseph, a mason, Sarah, a factory hand, Mary, Hannah (7), James (4) & Harriet (2). Living 2 houses away in Marlow’s Yard was son Samuel, a mason, & his wife Elen.

Son Joseph married Harriett Marriott in 1881 in Mansfield & by 1891 they were living in Bradford, Lancashire with 4 children.

Catherine died in Oct-December 1886, her death being registered at Mansfield.

In 1891 widower James, now a mason’s labourer, was living with his daughter Sarah who was married to Alfred Peat (30), a cotton spinner, & their 2 children – Arthur & Catherine. Four of James’ children were also living with Sarah & her husband – Mary, Hannah & James, all cotton factory hands, & Harriet.

Daughter Mary Elizabeth married Samuel Marriott, a greengrocer, in 1896 in Mansfield.

In 1901 James was still living with daughter Sarah & family at Park Avenue, Mansfield, Woodhouse. James, at the age of 72, was now described as a stone worker (road labourer) & he gave his place of birth as Loco-Lane, Derbyshire. James’s children James & Harriet were still living with sister Sarah too.

Daughter Harriet married Frank Barlow in 1901 in Mansfield.  By 1911 Harriett was widowed & living in Pinxton, Derbyshire & described as housekeeper to 30 year old Herbert James Pearson, a colliery horse keeper.  It appears that Harriet & Herbert had a number of children together.

James was still living with his daughter Sarah, now widowed, in 1911 at 4 Grove St, Mansfield, Woodhouse.  Sarah’s daughter Ethel (16) & son Alfred (7) were still at home.  James was described as a retired framework knitter (hosiery).

Daughter Hannah married George Townroe, a shoeing smith, in 1905 in Mansfield.

Son James, a colliery labourer underground, married Mary Ellen (Nellie) Etches in 1906.

James died in Jan-March 1913, aged 84, his death being registered at Mansfield.
